Jesse James Dupree spent most of his career building his notoriety in the Southern rock outfit Jackyl.
While in Jackyl, Jesse's shows where known to include over the top antics. One such included a guitar that doubles as a chainsaw. As you would expect, taking a guitar like this onstage can be risky to any player. Jesse's greatest concern though, was to his fans. He demanded a guitar that would help him pull off a great show and perform at his peak every night. That demand would lead him on a quest to find a luthier who could build an instrument to withstand the potential construction faults and tonal unstability this guitar/chainsaw combination might create.
Jesse turned to the one luthier he knew would be
up to the challenge...Ben Chafin.
"This was one of my coolest artist instruments ever and was my first for Chafin Custom. Jesse wanted a guitar with a built-in chainsaw! He also told me that several of the major brand's so-called custom shops had considered the project and said they couldn't or wouldn't do it. I like a challenge so I agreed to take on the task.
Having something with the weight and vibration of a chainsaw presents some unique challenges on a guitar. It took some work and creativity but within the allotted time we came up with a guitar that played and sounded great!"
Check out Jesse on tour with his new band Dixie Inc. Maybe, just maybe the rare Chafin Double-Chainsaw Ember might make an appearance!
